    I was so disturbed by the strange happenings that I did not notice at first the package that had arrived for me.

    It was small and wrapped in plain brown paper, much as if I'd ordered a video from one of those risque video catalogues.

    I opened it and found a small leather-bound notebook, filled with impeccably neat and distinct handwriting, diagrams, and figures. It was Professor Vortmann's recent research on molecular data storage.

    Professor Vortmann was clearly in great danger.
